Primary Care Q&A
What is primary care?
Primary care is preventive care. It’s designed to keep you healthy, today and in the future. The team at Wolfson Medical Center offers a range of primary care services, including:
- Annual physicals
- Pre-employment physicals
- School and sports physicals
Wolfson Medical Center also provides periodic monitoring and treatment for all major health problems, including chronic conditions like:
- Diabetes
- Asthma
- High blood pressure
- Heart disease
- High cholesterol
Depending on your condition, the team at Wolfson Medical Center refers you to the right specialist for your condition, including to radiologists in the area.
What happens when I see my primary care provider?
Your provider reviews your medical history and asks about past illnesses and surgeries, as well as how you’re feeling presently. You’ll have your vital signs checked, including your:
- Blood pressure
- Height and weight
- Temperature
- Pulse
Your provider typically performs a physical exam and may update your immunizations and advise you to get a flu shot. If you need blood tests, Wolfson Medical Center offers the convenience of onsite blood draws.
What is primary care for men?
Depending on your age, your provider suggests certain tests to look for conditions that become more common with age. This includes screenings for:
- High cholesterol
- Diabetes
- Prostate cancer
For men between age 50-75, your provider generally recommends colorectal cancer screening.
What is primary care for women?
Your provider at Wolfson Medical Center tailors your care to your age and health history. He or she may recommend:
- A Pap smear: to test for early signs of cervical cancer
- Pelvic exam: assess your reproductive organs
You may also need a breast exam or mammogram. Your visit is an ideal time to discuss any health issues you’ve been experiencing.
What are school and sports physicals?
As your child grows older, he or she should see a provider at Wolfson Medical Center at least once a year. Right before school starts is an ideal time to schedule an appointment to bring their immunizations up to date to attend school. Your provider also uses the exam time to check your child’s heart and blood pressure, test for diabetes, and perform other screening tests as needed.
A sports physical is needed for your child to play sports in Nevada. A sports physical generally includes two parts: a review of your medical history and a physical exam. If your child is in good health, your provider at Wolfson Medical Center fills out or signs your sport physical form at the end of the appointment.
